Hawaiian Electric Company Inc.

Hawaiian Electric is Hawaii's main electricity utility, serving 95% of residents across five islands and working on grid modernization, smart meters and renewable energy.

Hawaiian Electric Company Inc. is Hawaii's primary electricity utility, supplying power to 95% of the state's residents across five islands: Oahu, Maui, Hawaii Island, Lanai and Molokai. Founded in 1891, the company operates more than 130 years after its origins in the Hawaiian kingdom, when King David Kalakaua first championed electrification.

Its technical work centres on grid modernization. Through its Grid Modernization Programme the company is deploying advanced metering infrastructure and undertaking integrated grid planning to update the state's energy infrastructure. Alongside this, a clean energy portfolio of solar and wind generation supports Hawaii's transition to renewable sources. Further customer-facing initiatives include Smart Renewable Energy Export, which enables customers to send renewable power back to the grid, and Shared Solar, which allows residents and businesses to take part in community solar projects.

The company's stated operating values are safe, reliable, affordable, clean and sustainable energy, with commitments to community resilience, environmental stewardship and economic vitality. It maintains customer incentive programmes designed to widen participation in the clean energy transition.
