NEW YORK POWER AUTHORITY

About

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is the largest state public power organization in the United States, established in 1931 and headquartered in White Plains, NY. It produces and transmits electricity across New York State, with more than 80% of its generation coming from clean, renewable hydropower sourced from 17 facilities. The authority operates a high-voltage transmission network spanning more than 1,550 circuit-miles of lines, providing some of the cheapest electricity in North America.

NYPA's technical scope covers power generation, transmission infrastructure, renewable energy development, grid modernization, electric vehicle infrastructure, and energy efficiency. Its EVolve NY initiative supports the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the state. The authority finances its operations through bond sales and electricity revenues rather than tax appropriations.

Under its VISION2030 Renewed strategic plan, NYPA is leading efforts toward a carbon-free, economically vibrant New York. The organisation has historically served as a model for federal public power initiatives, including the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Bonneville Power Administration.
