Cushing Terrell is a multidisciplinary architecture, engineering and design practice founded in 1938 and headquartered in Billings, Montana. The firm employs more than 500 team members across 17 offices in the United States, drawing on over 30 in-house disciplines, and has delivered projects in all 50 states. Its services span architecture; mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, environmental and refrigeration engineering; planning and landscape architecture; interior design; commissioning and energy services; historic preservation; and sustainability consulting.
Engineering and performance-related work is a core part of the practice. The firm's commissioning and energy services cover building performance, and its sustainability consulting focuses on creating sustainable systems and spaces. Design work is delivered under a user-centric approach the firm calls "Design Meets You", which emphasises collaboration, sustainability and innovative visualisation techniques. Project experience extends across healthcare, education, commercial, government, civic and cultural, hospitality, infrastructure, multi-family housing, residential, retail, mixed-use and technology sectors.
The practice was established by architects Ralph Cushing and Everett Terrell on a philosophy of integrating architecture, engineering and design within a single firm. That collaborative model remains central to how teams work, with staff working shoulder-to-shoulder across disciplines. The firm maintains a stated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and runs a Social Action programme of pro bono work and community service. It was named a 2026 Best Firm to Work For by Zweig Group. Strategic growth has been pursued through partnerships with investment firms and acquisitions, including that of Graphite Design Group.
