ASU Preparatory Academy is the K-12 arm of Arizona State University, a public research university founded in 1885 and headquartered in Tempe, Arizona. Its ASU Prep Digital programme delivers online preparatory education to school-age learners, and it sits within ASU's Learning Enterprise, an initiative that serves students at every stage of life, from K-12 through mid-career professionals and beyond. The wider university enrols more than 85,000 students drawn from all 50 U.S. states and over 165 countries, with additional campuses across the Phoenix metropolitan area and degree programmes delivered worldwide through ASU Online.

The academic base is broad. ASU offers over 800 undergraduate and graduate degree programmes across 16 colleges and more than 170 cross-disciplinary centres and institutes, and commits more than $1 billion annually to research. Principal research domains include space, sustainability, health, security and education, alongside cross-disciplinary work and entrepreneurship. Faculty are recruited internationally.

Institutional policy is set out in a charter that measures success by whom the university includes and how those learners succeed, rather than by whom it excludes. The university describes its model as the "New American University", emphasising access, excellence and impact; it has been consistently ranked as the country's most innovative university and leads the nation in sustainability in several global rankings.
